Q:  I took my son's car seat out of the back seat of my car recently and found a severe dark drink stain under the seat. My car has a light generic cloth upholstery, so the stain is very obvious. Any ideas on how to remove it without ruining the upholstery?
A:

Some upholstery stains are extremely stubborn to remove. It depends on what created the stain and how long it has had to completely set, or if the heat generation from a parked car has baked it in. In short, it needs to be tested to see if it can be totally removed or partially removed. In case the stain is serious and cannot be completely removed there are professionals that can do interior dying of fabric and leather upholstery.

Q:  I have a friend who regularly has his engine steam cleaned. Is this really necessary? Isn't there a danger of breaking something in the process?
A:  Steam cleaning of todays modern engines can be very risky. However some mistakenly assume that all engine cleaning involves the use of steam. Most professionals today will use high pressure cleaning which can also be risky if not done right. Simply put, todays automobiles have a great deal of electronics under the hood which can easily be infiltrated with steam or direct high pressure. However, if the consumer truly wants to maintain a clean engine, it can be done, but one should always be cautious. Clean engines are most important on the inside and not the outside. However; we don't see the inside which is the most crucial part that should be clean. Consumers are best advised to use good fuels and oils in todays egines to keep them operating at peak efficiency.

Q:  I have a pin size key scratch on the side of my car that goes all the way down to the metal. It travels all the way down the left side of my car from the wheel well to the tail lights. I do not have the money to repaint. Do you think waxing and buffing would make it less visible?
A:  I wish I could tell you there was a quick fix, but from the way you describe the key scratch, it sounds as if the only way it will be properly repaired is thru the use of a good paint and body shop. It's time to call ypour insurance company and report the vandalism.

Q:  My new car dealer has told me to only wash my car by hand. Is this necessary, or are carwash businesses safe for my new car?
A:  Typically your new car dealer is a salesperson with his own opinion. Make sure the recommendation is coming from the maunfacturer and not someone who may have a limited understanding of carwashing technology. Todays carwash technology has advanced dramatically to where professional equipment not only does a better job, but a safer wash protecting and enhancing the finish of the automobile. Many new car manufacturers use a mechanical carwash system and several new car dealers have what we often refer to as a mechanical carwash. Todays technology can be safe for a car, so feel comfortable with whatever choice you make. It's far more important that a car be washed and waxed frequently. If the old method of hand washing is done, be certain that you capture all the effluent so that it does not enter into our storm drains and contaminate our groundwater, rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Q:  I know this may sound stupid, but should you wait to wax a brand new car?
A:  No, don't wait any longer than is convenient for you. Protect that new car appearance and finish by applying a generous coating of good quality wax as soon as possible, and every few months thereafter. Wax will begin to breakdown after a few months, especially if the car is parked outside overnight, or frequently during the day in the bright sun. If you wash your car at home, please do not use a typical dishwashing detergent as most people do. They unknowing strip the layer of wax off as they use these types of products. If you wash your new car at home, use the proper products and you will not remove the wax. Most every professional carwash will use products that protect your coating of wax, and some even add further layers of protection to help your car repel the dirt and remain cleaner longer, so choosing a professional is always recommended for all your car care needs
